A native of village Sisota, Sambhal in the Moradabad district of UP, INDIA, Munni strikes out with her intense eyes. The physical intensity, translates into her work as well.

Educated till 10^th grade, Munni is engaged in making fashion Jewellery from Glass beads, also know as Poth in the native or trade language. Starting as a newlywed in 1985, Munni got into the family tradition and learnt this art form from her husband and mother-in-law. Today, Munni spends about 5-6 hours a day in creating jewellery pieces likes necklaces and bracelets.  Her elder daughter, “Surbhi” is learning the skills which she hopes will help her be a contributor to her family income after her marriage.    

“जब मैं छोटी  थी , मैं अपनी माँ को ही घर के काम करते देखती थी और हमें भाई और बहनों को प्यार से पलटी पोस्ती थीं | मेरे पिताजी एक पास की छोटी सी वर्कशॉप में मैकेनिक का काम करते थे | मेरी शादी १९८१  में जिस परिवार में हुई  वहां पर मेरे ससुराल वाला आभूषण बनाने का काम करते थे | जब जब मैंने वो देखे तो मुझे उनके तरह तरह के रंग और स्टाइल अच्छे लगने लगे | मैंने अपने पति से बोला की मैं भी यह काम सीखना चाहती हूँ ताकि मैं भी परिवार की आमदनी बढ़ाने मैं सहयोग कर सकूँ | मैंने यह काम सिखने में २ साल का टाइम लगाया | अब मैं यह काम अकेले कर सकती हूँ | ऐसा करने से मेरे घर परिवार की आय बढ़ गयी है और मेरा अपने आप पर विश्वास बढ़ गया है | मेरे ससुराल वाला भी अब मुझे इज्जत देते हैं | ”

English Translation

“When I was young, I saw my mother spending days only doing house hold work and mothering us brothers and sisters and our father used to work at a nearby workshop. I got married in 1981 in a family where they used to make jewellery items of different colours and styles. I was intrigued by them and requested my husband to teach me as well. I learnt the process for nearly 2 years after which I could work independently. I now add value to my family’s monthly earning and this has given me more self respect and confidence. My in-laws also see me with more respect.”
