Usmaan Mirza is a young artist in his early 30’s engaged in the making of fashion jewellery in the walled city area of Delhi. He is a graduate and has chosen this profession over other newer opportunities that came his way.
A soft spoken person, Usmaan has spend the last 12-15 years in the craft and has a reputation of high quality workmanship. Usmaan has a small family, his wife and 2 young boys aged 3 and 5.
“मेरा परिवार पिछले 3-4 पीढ़ियों के लिए हाथ कढ़ाई के काम में लगा हुआ है । मेरे पढ़ दादा लोग, अपने समय में उन कारखानों में काम करते थे जहाँ मुग़ल राज परिवार के सदस्यों की ड्रेस तैयार करी जाती थी | मेरे पिता जी ने मुझे पढ़ने के लिए जोर दिया जिससे मुझे नए तौर तरीकों का पता रहे | मैंने दिल्ली यूनिवर्सिटी के जाखिर हुसैन कॉलेज से ग्रेजुएशन की पढ़ाई करी | कॉलेज में रहते हुए, मैंने फैशन की आभूषण बनाने शुरू किये जैसे गले की माला, हाथ के कंगन इत्यादि | तब मुझे यह अहसास हुई की में यही काम करना चाहता था और अपने खानदान की परंपरा को आगे ज़ारी रखना चाहता था | आज मेरे बनाये आभूषण कई देशों में एक्सपोर्ट होते हैं और मैं नए नए डिज़ाइन बनाना चाहता हूँ |”
English Translation
“My family has been engaged in the hand embroidery work for the last 3-4 generations. My fore fathers used to be engaged in workshops where the dresses for the Mughals and their ladies were made. My father insisted that I should get proper education and I went to Zakir Hussain College of Delhi University. While in college, I started to make and create fashion jewellery likes necklaces and bracelets. That was when I realized that I had to take this up as full time profession and carry forward the family tradition of hand workmanship. Today the items made by me are exported to various countries and I want to continue making newer designs”
