Zarood.com is propelled by the sheer desire by its founding team who believe in the need to promote handmade products in the country. The team share a passion for traditional handicrafts, an art form facing tough competition from machine embroideries. Putting a foot into the online world of social entrepreneurship, our main mission was to take traditional and unique Indian art from skilled crafting hands and into the markets. In our journey of last several months, we have come across several instances of institutions that are promoting several causes like Intellectual Disability, Women Empowerment etc. 

We met the people behind these institutions and realized that the work being done by them is of no less importance in today’s time.

For instance, one such institution is Muskaan, a voluntary "not for profit" organisation catering to persons with intellectual disability and looking after their special needs. Muskaan’s students make a variety of high quality, daily use, life style products, popular among many people.

Another such institution is Dhaani. DHAANI has its roots in the human rights work being done by Anhad in Bihar. When ANHAD’s volunteers travelled from village to village organising meetings and setting up women empowerment centres in 13 villages over 2 years in Bihar. The team managed to engage numerous rural communities in the districts of Araria and Purnea and successfully trained +500 women in the skills of weaving mats, durries and making jute products. The produce began to be sold in the local markets and for the first time in their lives, these women were earning a livelihood, outside of labouring in fields. The money these women were making was important. Imagine a sixteen year old girl, with a pitiable educational background, and dependent on the male earners in her family for her livelihood, contributing to the family’s income. This movement has been supported by Ms. Soha Ali Khan amongst many other noted personalities.

Yet another instance is the institution called Jogira, based out of Bihar that works to develop newer products through fusion of traditional Sikki grass art forms and contemporary styles and designs. Promoted a NIFT graduate, Jogira has been instrumental in helping to change the lives of the women who have been touched by them.

Meeting with these persons, was a great soul searching experience. In today’s times, when the world is moving so fast in the digital age, it is hard to believe that there are persons like these who have dedicated their lives to the cause close to their heart.

This set off a thought process and contemplation on the possible areas where Zarood could help them. On interactions and research, we found that almost all the goods that were produced through their works were being sold through physical store or a few random marketing activities.

Given the emergence of e-commerce marketplaces today, we offered our support their causes by including their products on the Zarood platform. This association means that we will make all possible efforts to spread the word about the causes that are being promoted by these institutions and make their products more accessible to patrons across India.
